DIRECTED READING PROGRAM

Inspired by the program by the same name hosted by McGill's mathematics department (which is itself inspired by the program of the same name at the University of Chicago), the DRP "pairs interested undergraduate students with graduate student mentors for weekly [or bi-weekly] 1-on-1 meetings, so as to learn about research-level or research-aimed topics in [philosophy] in a casual setting. In this way, undergraduates can obtain guidance from someone who is further along the research path but can still relate to them as a peer." (source) The meetings are supposed to be one hour long, and the undergraduate student is expected, towards the end of the semester, to do a (roughly) 15-minute-long presentation on what was researched. This presentation would be open to all philosophy undergraduates, graduates, and professors.

Topics for the DRP are whatever the undergraduate and graduate student decide on (although, it is preferred that the topic is related to what the graduate student is researching) and we try to pair undergrad with the topics they are interested in. Since we are in philosophy, the majority of the work is expected to consist of reading, writing, and analyzing. The DRP's first cohort ran between January to March 2023.
